Cleopatra and the Asp
Project type
Fine Art, Oil painting - Symbolism
Date
2000
Location
Montréal
This is my first oil paintings after seeing an exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts called : Lost Paradise: Symbolist Europe. It was one of the most beautiful and inspiring exhibitions I ever saw. I wanted to play with layers of light so I studied Maxfield Parrish's methods of layering coloured varnishes over the painting to play with the reflective light. I know what is historically incorrect throughout but it wasn't about being factual. I played with geometry and texture. I imagined the Nile would be more fertile millennia past, and I used greek and roman influence in the architecture. I also factored in that support statues were configured for support not to match human form but to give an impression of what occurs in nature. The Egyptian paintings are based on authentic ancient paintings. I also used gold metallic paint. I was young and loved what I loved.
