As a lad my parents never took us to Star Wars, they felt sketchy about 'the force' and the promotion of war. I think I was 10 when it came out. I remember listening to the soundtrack closing my eyes and building on the images I saw on the Posters. I listened to my cousins and friends chat it up with awe and enthusiasm. I imagined even more bits of the movie in my head. I never saw the original Star Wars until after The Empire Strikes Back was released. VHS and Beta were in their nascent stage and incredibly expensive.
Jaws, came out when I was just 8. I remember a boy from my elementary school class, having seen it and describing the film, my jaw dropped. It inspired fear without me even witnessing it on screen. But the poster of the shark sparked curiosity that never diminished. I stared at the poster enthralled by the dark abyss of his mouth and the razor edged teeth that first welcome us into its cavernous abyss. Even the darkness of the ocean conveys its own terrors. The trinity of elements is powerful there is tension in every corner of the painting. The fourth element of the crimson text sets the tone like a blood curdling scream! I wasn't allowed to see this one either... I read the book by Peter Benchley and several other books by him. I eventually saw Jaws in my teens.
These two films changed our experience of cinema for all time. They also altered our experience with Space and the Sea for generations.
This drawing is hommage to these Blockbusters.
