Not meaning to be controversial nor intend to act with cultural appropriation, this piece began in a place of curiosity. When I was growing up the people of the continent of Africa were shown on TV where the young were emaciated and flies landed on their faces. I thought what if I turned that image into one of beauty. Then I remember all the controversy over Afros. I thought hair is a gift while you got it. There is something happens when I draw repetitive patterns - it is therapeutic. The butterflies were selected from West Africa, which means she looks towards the west, what might she be thinking?
